Introduction to the Internet and the web
What is the Internet?
It is a global collection of networks that are totally independent not being owned or run by any individual or company. It can best be described as the biggest network of computer networks on earth. It came to prominence in the final years of the 20 th Century and has rapidly become a world wide phenomenon. Today the Internet has become an important information, communication and trade hub.
What is the World Wide Web?
The web is not the Internet but rather a retrieval based system that access the Internet to retrieve information using client-servers. The web is actually a system of clients (web browsers) and servers that uses the Internet for its data exchange.

How can I get online?
Telecom Egypt was proud to initiate and support the development of the Internet within Egypt by supporting the backbone support to the Internet Service Providers and by launching the highly successful free Internet service in 2002. Today it's even easier with the "Computer in Every Home" initiative we launched with Banque Misr and computer vendors.
Using the "Computer in Every Home" initiative you can purchase a modern PC, from a wide selection, and then spread the cost across your quarterly Telecom Egypt bill - removing barrier of the up front cost of the PC. Please click here for more information
You then have a number of options for accessing the Internet. Telecom Egypt supports three access options depending on your needs.
- For limited access and basic browsing of the Internet you can use standard dial up using your existing telephone line (at up to 56 Kbps) and the free numbers (0777-000 or 0707-0000). Please click here for more information
- For faster access you can upgrade to Line Plus ISDN (at up to 128 Kbps). Please click here for more information
- For the fastest possible speeds you move up to ADSL. Please click here for more information
Once you have chosen the best option to meet your needs enjoy all the wonders of the web.
